Multi-carrier small cells slash deployment costs of in-building coverage by 80%

New report from Wireless 20/20 highlights commercial advantages of multi-carrier small cells for the ‘Middleprise’

Tuesday 21st February 2017, London, UK - Multi-carrier (multi-operator) small cells can reduce the total costs of delivering enhanced in-building coverage by as much as 80% according to new analysis from Wireless 20/20. The whitepaper, commissioned by ip.access, presents compelling evidence of how neutral host, multi-operator small cells can deliver economically viable in-building solutions, unlocking new commercial opportunities in the ‘Middleprise’, which represents a $20bn segment of the global in-building wireless market.

Middleprise venues include small and medium-sized commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, colleges and even small retail stores, which all benefit from improved indoor mobile coverage and capacity. Research by CommScope has revealed that only two percent of commercial buildings have dedicated technology to ensure strong and reliable indoor mobile coverage and capacity.

For the vast majority of these businesses the high cost of Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) solutions is prohibitive and the needs of this market segment are not well served by most mobile operators with traditional single operator small cell solutions.

In contrast, Wireless 20/20’s analysis* found that new virtualised small cell solutions can face the challenge of addressing the economic and multi-carrier requirements of small and medium sized venues, with multi-carrier small cell solutions offering 50-80% Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) savings over a 10-year timeframe.

All major sports leagues and teams are driving digitization to enhance the audience experience in major sports stadiums. Several venue owners and mobile carriers have been investing heavily in DAS and fiber network deployments to expand mobile broadband capacity in major sports arenas and stadiums. In the NY area, AT&T is upgrading the DAS infrastructure in Yankee Stadium and both Verizon Wireless and AT&T invested in separate DAS solutions for MetLife Stadium to handle the wireless needs of the fans at Super Bowl XLVIII.

Mavenir Research Indicates 4G Services Critical for Monetization

4G Operators gain a clear financial advantage by offering Voice, Video and Messaging services with basic connectivity services

Mavenir Systems, a leading provider of innovative mobile IMS convergence solutions, says research confirms that 4G Operators can gain a clear financial advantage by offering Voice, Video and Multimedia Messaging services together with 4G basic connectivity services.

According to research done by Heavy Reading and Wireless 20/20, launching 4G Services immediately will result in a tenfold increase in 10 year NPV, a 50% increase in IRR and a 50% increase in ARPU over a data-only service strategy. In today's competitive environment, 4G operators need to launch communication services to mitigate risk of losing subscriber loyalty and yielding services to third party, over-the-top providers like Skype and Google that do not contribute to operator revenues.

The study also reveals that delaying the launch by just two years causes a NPV reduction of 20% and 10 years IRR reduction of 4% and an ARPU reduction of 7.9%.

"We've surmised that this is the case and now we have quantifiable data that supports a rapid move by Mobile Operators," said Shubh Agarwal, Mavenir's Vice President of Marketing. "Proactively marketing and branding these converged communications services will also enrich the end user experience, offer greater differentiation, improve customer loyalty and reduce churn."
