Our Team Haig A. Sarkissian Haig brings over 25 years of experience in the telecommunications industry with focus on the wireless communication market. As a consultant he has advised over 50 leading 3G/4G service providers and OEMs on strategy, business plan development, target market definition, technology assessment and selections, spectrum acquisition, as well as partnership development, M&A and investments. His clients span from start-ups to Fortune 100 companies. Haig’s areas of focus include analyzing the challenges of network densification as 3G and 4G networks evolve into 5G. He customizes the Wireless 20/20 WiROI™ Tool to analyze the trade-offs of the latest Wi-Fi, DAS, Small Cell and Cloud RAN technologies in order to help clients realize opportunities while optimizing their network densification strategies, including implementing RAN sharing as well as “Carrier Neutral” approaches of building 4G and 5G networks. Haig has served as an expert witness for major OEMs in US patent re-examination cases. His areas of expertise include Wi-Fi and broadband wireless technologies, including the integration of these technologies in smartphones. Prior to his consulting career, Haig Sarkissian was VP of Sales and Marketing at Data Race and held senior management positions at AT&T. He holds a BSEE from Pratt Institute and an MSEE from Polytechnic University and holds 9 US patents.
Randall C. Schwartz Mr. Schwartz has been a key participant in the broadband wireless market for the last 10 years. He brings 20 years of experience in the semiconductor, as well as wireless industries. He advises clients on spectrum valuation, technology selection, business case development and due diligence. His recent areas of expertise include Wi-Fi offload, small cells, cloud RAN. Schwartz has led the development of strategy, market development and product development for both leading chipset vendors and equipment manufacturers in the broadband wireless market. He has extensive experience in working with wireless service providers to develop service strategies and business plans. Schwartz has held engineering, marketing, business development and consulting positions with Arraycomm, Intel, BeamReach, Texas Instruments, AT&T Microelectronics, PA Consulting, and Trimble Navigation. He holds both undergraduate and graduate engineering degrees from Dartmouth College.
Berge Ayvazian Berge Ayvazian, now a principal consultant, joined Wireless 20/20 as a Senior Analyst in 2009, following more than 20 years as a senior telecom industry analyst and strategy consultant with Yankee Group, where he served as CEO and co-chairman of the 4G World and Mobile Internet World conference programs. Ayvazian is now conducting 4G Network and Mobile Internet research on the convergence of broadband and mobility and the evolving business strategies of mobile service providers and their technology vendors. He leads an integrated 4G/LTE practice to help operators and their vendors to develop their 4G technology roadmaps and build a complete mobile Internet business case leveraging the Wireless 20/20 WiROI™ 4G Business Case Analysis Tools. He has used these tools to develop operator 4G network business cases, and address the most challenging modeling problems associated with Wi-Fi Offload, Small Cell deployments and 4G networks to serve venues such as stadiums, airports and train stations. Ayvazian is also the Program Director and Conference Chair of UBM Tech’s Tower & Small Cell Summit and 4G World conferences in the US and India. He also serves a frequent speaker at other telecom industry events worldwide. Marc Patterson Marc brings more than 25 years of enterprise-focused, market-leading service development and business consulting experience in wireless, mobility and security to Wireless 20/20. A frequent industry speaker and media contributor, Marc most recently served as Vice President of Products and Account Management for Boingo Wireless where he had global responsibility for the overall specification, development and management of Boingo’s diverse mobility portfolio, including Boingo’s Wi-Fi, Small Cell/Distributed Antenna System (DAS) and Boingo Broadband services. Specializing in large venue/large audience wireless deployments, Marc has worked with dozens of airports, stadiums and arenas to deliver high-quality consumer and industrial wireless solutions. Marc previously served as Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Data Services at BT Global Services and Vice President of the Managed Access Services and Mobile Workplace Solutions teams at Infonet Services Corporation, leading the Infonet mobility business transition when the company was acquired by BT Global Services. Marc is the recipient of many wireless industry awards, and sits on the advisory board of Crowd Source Development. Marc holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University and an MBA from Pepperdine University.
Michael Orr Michael Orr is a senior analyst and consultant for Wireless 20/20, specializing in IoT applications and LPWAN network solutions designed to interconnect battery-powered devices with low bit rates over long ranges. He is leading the new Wireless 20/20 IoT practice, assisting clients to select the right network connectivity solution for coverage, power consumption and cost, to ensure that new IoT applications can be delivered at a reasonable ROI. Michael has an extensive background in the mobility, embedded software, and IoT markets, and has led business development, and sales and marketing activities in these spaces for the last 20 years at brand name and startup companies. Before joining Wireless 20/20, Michael was the Vice President of Sales and Partners for SIGFOX North America, responsible for sales across key verticals including shipping and logistics, agriculture, smart spaces, and industry/energy. Michael led mobility and IoT sales for Fortune 100 clients with the Communications, Media, and Technology sector at Accenture before joining Sigfox. Prior to that, Michael was SVP of Sales for Smarterphone AS, a leader in providing smartphone capabilities for low cost phones for developing markets, where he was responsible for global business development leading to a successful acquisition by Nokia in 2011. Earlier in his career, Michael was at QUALCOMM where he was responsible for global business development which was instrumental in QUALCOMM becoming a leader in the global mobile phone silicon market. In the quest to seed the world with QUALCOMM technology, Michael was also responsible for launch and operations of a CDMA network in Ukraine. Michael began his career in the defense industry and joined the telecom industry through pioneering development of Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), first applied by QUALCOMM and Cox Communications in the Southern California market. Michael holds BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering.
Magnus Johansson Mr. Johansson brings 15 years of senior management operations experience in fixed and wireless broadband telecommunications. Throughout his career at BellSouth (AT&T), Cable and Wireless Caribbean, Digicel Group Caribbean, and Yota del Peru he has utilized his financial, technical, and commercial acumen to select the right market opportunities, implementing the most appropriate technology platforms enabling a competitive advantage while creating unique, sustainable and profitable businesses. Mr. Johansson has successfully orchestrated complex multimillion-dollar global acquisitions, new start-up operations, and business restructurings with focus on achieving maximum ROI. He excels at defining and aligning marketing, sales, business strategies, resources, and value propositions to maximize financial performance and build customer loyalty in challenging market environments. Mr. Johansson has conducted technical trials of multiple 3G+ and 4G networks and concluded commercial negotiations with Tier 1 vendors. He has secured over $100M from shareholders to build out fixed line ADSL and 4G networks in the Caribbean and South America, with each 4G network in the Caribbean commanding a 25%-30% market share of the broadband market within its first 12 months of operation. Al is the former Deputy Commissioner of Telecommunications Planning at NYC's Department of IT & Telecommunications (DoITT) with extensive domestic and international experience with Telecommunications & Broadband Planning senior officials and their initiatives to implement Smart City solutions. Tom Gruba Tom Gruba joins Wireless 20/20 as Principal Consultant and brings 30 years of experience in wireless and wireline telecommunications serving in various capacities including engineering, product management, marketing and innovation. Tom served as Sr. Director of Marketing at Alcatel-Lucent's wireless infrastructure division where he lead the launch of lightRadio™, a pioneering Cloud RAN solution. He served as the head of product marketing at Motorola leading the launches of 2G, 3G and 4G technologies including LTE, WiMAX, Tom's recent interests include analyzing the challenges of network densification as 3G and 4G networks evolve into 5G. He has studied the tradeoffs of the latest Wi-Fi, DAS, Small Cell and Cloud RAN technologies and brings extensive experience to Wireless 20/20 clients who are interested in evaluating the opportunities of optimizing their network densification strategies including implementing RAN sharing, as well as “Carrier Neutral” approaches of building 4G and 5G networks. Tom offers innovation strategy, implementation and training to help companies establish a strong pipeline for their product or service portfolio. His expertise includes product strategy development, product marketing and management, down to the brass tacks of creating marketing strategy and developing sales and marketing tools for both direct and indirect channels. John Liebetreu, Ph. D. Dr. Liebetreu has over 25 years of wireless communications systems engineering experience at a variety of companies including Motorola, Intel Corporation, and Intersil Corporation. He is a recognized expert in wireless communication chip architectures, creating complex system-on-chip solutions for broadband wireless applications, including the first 622 Mbps commercial wireless modem. He has been active in the IEEE 802.16 standards development community since its inception in 1999, including service as a task group chair, developing the initial IEEE 802.16 PHY specification. Liebetreu's previous experience includes CTO of Sicom Incorporated – a broadband wireless start-up, Senior Scientist at Intersil Corporation, and Chief Technologist in Intel’s broadband wireless division. He holds a BSEE from Michigan Technological University, a MSEE from Arizona State University, and received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla.
Dr. Hideo Okinaka Dr. Hideo Okinaka is a visionary veteran of the wireless industry with technology and business development expertise and brings 37 years of experience in the wireless operator space. Until March 2014 since 2003, he has held several executive positions including both technical and business responsibilities at KDDI, one of the three major service provider groups in Japan. During that period, he led a project for the globally first large-scale implementation of over-the-air firmware update of mobile devices, FOTA, in cooperation with a Silicon Valley-based startup. He was also responsible for the corporate-wide standards strategy and drove global standard initiatives, e.g., as a member of the Board of Directors of CDMA Development Group (CDG) and WiMAX Forum, and as the Chair of 3GPP2. Prior to that, he worked on the 3G CDMA commercial launch, leading to one of the first large-scale deployment of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, an IP-centric and best-effort-based mobile data system, in the world. In the past, he played a leading role of the TDMA-based cellular mobile system standardisation and its commercial launch in Japan. He also engaged in the bidding for offshore spectrum auctions and succeeded in securing a license in Paraguay. He started his professional career in 1977 as a mobile satellite system R&D engineer accomplishing the commercial system design and specification of the first global digital-based mobile satellite system standard named Inmarsat-M/B. He received a B.S. degree in Applied Physics, an M.S. degree in Physics and Dr. Engineering in Communications Science from Waseda University. Dr. Okinaka provides Wireless 20/20 clients strategic advice in the 4G service provider space. Dr. Arif Ansari Dr. Arif Ansari has been a diverse technology development and management professional in the wireless telecom industry for the last 20 years. In the two decades, he has held positions ranging from deeply technical to management and strategy functions in the development, implementation and optimization of cutting edge wireless networks, products and services. Dr. Ansari's career has included consulting for RF Engineering and Technology Advisory and Strategy at LCC International and inCode Telecom (now a unit of Ericsson), technology evaluation and implementation at inception points of CDMA, W-CDMA, WiMAX and LTE at Nextel and Skyterra (now LightSquared) and product development for satellite, terrestrial and hybrid ATC communications at Lockheed Martin, Cartiza and his latest role as CTO of Reverb Networks developing Self-Optimizing Network (SON) solutions. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Southern Illinois University.
Mark Rice Mr. Rice has over 20 years of experience internationally in the communications semiconductor industry and recently, has focused exclusively on the 4G LTE space. His interests include the evolution of the 4G LTE ecosystem and the integration of LTE chipset technology beyond smartphones, into tablets, consumer electronics devices, and M2M communications, to enable the Internet of Everything. Mr. Rice provides Wireless 20/20 clients with strategic advice in the semiconductor, mobile handset and M2M space. Prior to joining Wireless 20/20, Mr. Rice served as General Manager and VP of Worldwide Sales at Altair Semiconductor Inc., an innovative 4G LTE semiconductor startup. He led Altair through the exit from the WiMAX market through a successful LTE market launch. He also spent 6 years at Texas Instruments where he led multiple turn-around and startup efforts within the broadband and cable communications chipset business units. Prior to TI, Mr. Rice was Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Alcatel Microelectronics USA. He was a founding member of the PC OEM management team at Conexant Systems which came to dominate the OEM PC modem space. He holds a BS degree in Finance from the University of Texas at Dallas.
Eric Dentler Eric joined Wireless 20/20 after a long career in high technology and software marketing, sales and service innovation. He is now focused on helping venue owners and their vendors deploy the best wireless network technology and software solutions to meet the needs of their most demanding tenants, customers, attendees and residents. Eric is also an expert in leveraging cloud, content management, location and analytics to help his clients monetize wireless broadband connectivity. Eric joined the Wi-Fi ecosystem in 2002, and has sold the equipment and tools to deploy managed hotspots in all the US McDonalds and Starbucks outlets, two dozen major airports, and countless arenas, stadiums, convention centers, colleges and corporate offices. He has vertical industry expertise in smart cities, hospitality and retail and has been focused on Software as a Service long before the term was coined. He has a diverse background having spent ten years at Sun Microsystems, ten at Cisco Systems and ten years as a sales executive and interim CEO in various startups in the telecom, push-technology, eCommerce and interactive television sectors.

He is now focused on helping telecom operators and their vendors successfully launch new 4G services and applications that drive subscriber and market share growth. His work with mobile operators in the MENA region has leveraged customer intelligence, technology and business case analysis to increase mobile broadband revenues and improve profitability. Bassam’s powerful capabilities and impressive skill set are well evidenced in his most recent role with Omnitele as General Manager and Head of Sales & Marketing MENA, where he was strategically appointed to transform the region into a growth center, contribute to executive management activities, and consolidate the firm as a leading regional telecoms consulting company. Bassam achieved great success in client engagements across the Region, including a large network benchmark project in Libya, network audit project with Ooredoo Qatar and a Customer Experience Network Audit with Ooredoo Kuwait. Michael O. Jonsson Mr. Jonsson brings to Wireless 20/20 over 25 years of experience in the telecommunications and service provider industry, focused on solutions for improved Wi-Fi utilization and monetization, combined with improved end-user experience. As a consultant he is focused on the intersection of Wi-Fi and carrier offload, and exploring new ways for businesses to capitalize on their synergies. Michael Jonsson has strong international experience having lived and worked in many diverse markets around the world. Mr. Jonsson has held various leadership roles including VP Business Management, VP Sales, VP Business Development during his 14+ years at Ericsson. He expanded Ericsson’s markets to cover service providers, operators and Telco vendors in all major geographical regions including Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. While at Birdstep Technology, beginning in 2012, he was given the responsibility of building and developing the US market and the US sales team, where he successfully built and increased annual sales from $100k to greater than $10 Million USD, closing deals with Tier 1 operators, world-leading hardware vendors and large system integrators.
Azat Sakanyan Mr. Sakanyan has over 20 years of experience in the Wireless and High Technology industries with focus on Eastern Europe and CIS countries. Most recently, he was CEO of Clearstream Armenia where he started a pilot WiMAX project to deploy a high-speed broadband wireless network in Yerevan using the 3.5 GHz band. He brings to Wireless 20/20 a unique experience in Eastern European regulatory affairs and spectrum valuation. Mr. Sakanyan’s interests are in the area of new broadband wireless business models, including local market driven pricing, wholesale marketing and telecom bundling strategies that promote the maximum exploitation of spectrum assets and investments. In addition, he focuses on exploring the funding of broadband wireless projects by local investors in each of the target markets. Mr. Sakanyan holds a BS degree in Civil and Hydro-Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Yerevan Armenia. He is fluent in Russian, Spanish, Armenian and English.
Martin Rauchwerk Mr. Rauchwerk has 23 years of experience in semiconductors for the communications industry. Most recently he had marketing responsibility for Infineon’s satellite radio chip-set business and shipped millions of units to Sirius Satellite for their radio products. Prior to this, Rauchwerk had marketing responsibility for various Agere Systems communication product lines such as DSL, VoIP, 1394, USB as well as their NAS business. Rauchwerk was previously the Marketing Director of Lucent Technologies’ highly successful modem chip set business which has shipped over 200 Million Units with revenue of over $2 Billion. Rauchwerk started his career at AT&T Bell Laboratories where he wrote DSP code for Modems and Speech Coder Products. He received a BSEE Degree from Rutgers University, an MSEE Degree from Cornell University, and an MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business.
Robin Bestel Ms. Bestel brings over 25 years of experience assisting executives within the semiconductor, computing, networking, wireless, Internet, software, and consumer electronics industries with Marketing Communications program planning and management. As a consultant, her strong business acumen and understanding of technical products has allowed her to create and manage numerous, highly successful launches and on-going communications programs for several Fortune 500 companies and over a dozen start-ups that enabled them grow sales and reach profitability. Prior to becoming a consultant, Ms. Bestel was Senior Marketing Communications Manager for AT&T's Personal Communication Systems business unit, where she was responsible for launching AT&T's entry into that emerging market. She held several management positions at AT&T Microelectronics (now LSI), where she was responsible for managing the launch of several ASIC Design Centers around the world, managing international corporate events, trade shows and sales conferences, managing corporate advertising campaigns, and launching over 100 new products, which during this period, grew into a $1 billion dollar business. She received her BS Degree from Kutztown University.
Fred Campbell Fred Campbell is a Senior Policy Advisor with Wireless 20/20, assisting clients with the formulation and implementation of complex technology regulatory policies. Mr. Campbell has 15 years of experience developing innovative approaches to public policy in the communications and information technology sectors for private clients, non-profit organizations and government officials. Campbell was responsible for spectrum and wireless policy in the US while serving as Chief of the FCC Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and as wireless advisor to former FCC chairman Kevin Martin. Under his oversight, the FCC conducted the two of the largest and most successful wireless spectrum auctions in its history raising over $32 billion and supporting the industry evolution to 4G LTE. Campbell serves a wide range of private and public sector clients as a regulatory consultant and policy advisor to promote innovation, free markets, fair competition, infrastructure investment and the efficient use of spectrum as a valuable resource in the wireless and telecom industry. He has also advised government officials on spectrum and Internet policy in Mexico and Panama and served as an expert on the Indian government’s 2.5 GHz spectrum advisory committee. He frequently speaks at major events, appears on television and radio shows, and publishes articles and editorials in well-known journals and newspapers, including Fox News, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Forbes and the Atlantic. His areas of policy expertise include spectrum, mobile wireless, satellite, Internet, telephony, cable, broadcast, privacy, regulatory organization and free expression issues. Campbell is currently the Director of the Center for Boundless Innovation in Technology and an adjunct professor in the Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law LL.M program at the University of Nebraska College of Law where he also serves as an inaugural member of the program’s advisory board. Mr. Campbell was formerly a Fellow and Director of the Communications Liberty and Innovation Project at the Competitive Enterprise Institute and President and CEO of the Wireless Communications Association International. Campbell earned a Diploma in Modern Standard Arabic at the Defense Language Institute, a B.A. from Excelsior College, and a J.D. with high distinction from the University of Nebraska College of Law.
Mike Collado Mike Collado is a marketing executive and brand evangelist who helps companies win mindshare and capture marketshare. Mike recently served as Vice President of Marketing for SOLiD – a manufacturer of Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Optical Transport solutions – where he led the strategy and execution for all corporate marketing, product marketing and marketing communications. During his tenure, Mike helped launch the Safer Buildings Coalition, a public-safety industry advocacy group. He also defined and developed thought leadership for the "Middleprise” market segment, and was the visionary and content contributor for the indoor public-safety communications eBook, The Imperative. Prior to SOLiD, Mike established brand awareness for MobileAccess, a DAS manufacturer later acquired by Corning. He also led the turnaround for a managed services company and helped reboot a middleware business to compete against larger incumbents. Mike serves as an advisor for both industry and non-profit organizations. He is a board member of the Safer Buildings Coalition and a member of the advisory councils for IWCE and the Northeast DAS & Small Cells Association (NEDAS). Mike was named “Volunteer of the Year” in 2011 for his work on behalf of the YMCA of Central Virginia. Mike is an author, blogger and frequent speaker at wireless industry events.
Dr. Riad Hartani Dr. Riad Hartani is an advisor at Wireless 20/20 that focuses on 4G and Mobile Broadband Network strategies and business development. Riad is an active contributor to various industry fora, such as the IETF, ATMF, ITU-T, OIF, IPv6, IEEE and the 3GPP, and a frequent speaker and panelist at international industry events. As a highly regarded technologist, Riad has directed a wide range of engineering and consulting projects including communications infrastructure, broadband service provider strategy, mobile network infrastructure, enterprise networking strategy, information technology and applications. Riad was recently Head of Worldwide Systems Engineering at Wichorus (acquired by Tellabs), whose focus was on building 4G network systems. Prior to this he was Head of Global Technology Solutions at Anagran (acquired by Saisei Networks), and the Chief Architect with Caspian (acquired by Sable Networks), which developed advanced internet routing solutions. Riad has held senior engineering and business development positions with Nortel in Canada, the Canadian National Research Labs in Canada, Hitachi Central Research Labs in Japan and the French National Research Labs in France. He is also a founding member of several technology startup companies and is highly sought after as a technical advisor to numerous ventures in the US, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Dr. Riad Hartani holds two Engineering degrees and a Master’s degree in applied mathematics and systems/computer engineering. Khaled Kamal Al Amayreh Mr. Khaled Kamal Al Amayreh brings 25 years of diverse experience in the IT and Telecommunications industries in the Middle East, North Africa and the CIS Region. Specializing in Wireless Networks, Mr. Amayreh has extensive experience in Broadband Wireless Networks, the Mobile Internet and VAS industries including quantitative, managerial, and multi-million dollar business acquisitions. His responsibilities have included multiple proven due-diligence processes, resulting in his managing four 4G WiMAX™ network start-up companies in Jordan and the CIS region: in Algeria (AnwarNet); Georgia (MaxiMali); Armenia (iCON); and the Ukraine (Intellecom). He was the Founder, Managing Director and Chairman of MaxiMali, in Georgia and iCON in Armenia. He was also the Managing Director and a Board Member of LMS2, a German SPV, held 100% ownership of Intellecom based in the Ukraine, and was a Board Member of VTEL, a submarine CLS and wholesale Data company based in Jordan. In his role as an Advisor, Mr. Amayreh will provide direct support to Wireless 20/20 clients in the Middle East. His focus areas are MNO’s transitioning from 3G to 4G, Spectrum Acquisitions and re-farming, business re-engineering, business plan development to position MNOs for the next generation Mobile Internet. Khaled holds a B.S. in Telecommunications Engineering from Jordan University, Amman, Jordan, 1987.
Sheldon Gilbert Sheldon Gilbert has over 25 years of experience in the wireless communications and networking industries. He is a serial entrepreneur who has started, grown and sold several wireless communications companies. Gilbert was co-founder, as well as Vice President of Engineering at Ensemble Communications, a developer of wireless base stations and networking equipment, and one of the pioneers in broadband wireless communications. Many of the companies Mr. Gilbert has helped found have been sold to Fortune 500 companies such as Qualcomm and Tellabs. Previously, Gilbert was Vice President of Business Development at start-up WiChorus, a developer of next-generation packet core products for 4G wireless networks. In this role, he was responsible for competitive intelligence and business development with Tier 1 Carriers in the US and around the world. His expertise and assistance led to several carriers deploying 4G wireless networks including one of the first major 4G wireless networks in the world ‒ a nation-wide deployment in the United States. WiChorus was acquired by Tellabs in 2009 for almost $165M, at which time Gilbert became Vice President of Marketing, Mobile Internet. Gilbert’s areas of expertise span wireless modems and radio technology, communications protocols, and wireless network design. He received his Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT and holds more than 10 patents in the field of wireless and broadband communications.
